We can very clearly see that things are going in the right direction. Even in use, users are strongly encouraged to give their opinion on a particular feature and to indicate if there is anything that could be improved.
I am fond of these companies which are constantly evolving and which do not hesitate to give more and more. For the moment the price has not budged, which is still an excellent thing.
From a tool 100% focused on SEM and keywords, we have moved to a complete platform that covers a broad spectrum of web marketing as a whole. Next year other improvements will emerge, particularly in lead generation, and help with content creation for site editors.

Compared to the competition, SEMrush Tool pricing is reasonable. Having used Moz for a long time, I now consider that SEMrush Tool offers the best value for money on the market. The value provided is greater than the asking price, knowing also that the tool is constantly evolving (100 updates in 2016 alone).
If you take a year-round subscription, you will get around 20% off. I have the cheapest option ( $ 99 / month) because it meets my needs perfectly. For an agency consultant who takes care of a lot of sites, I recommend the $ 199 one. But for a webmaster who manages 3 – 4 niche sites, the $ 99 offer is more than enough.

SEMrush in Detail
I will detail each major feature here. I do not go into detail for each of them because there would be too much to say and the test would be far too long. I am focusing on the essentials here and will be writing articles specific to each need in the coming days.
Analysis of the overall traffic of a site (yours or a competitor)
This feature is for me the most important of SEMRush. It allows you to see at a glance all the data linked to a site. Yours, or that of a competitor. No need to have Analytics access, SEMrush relies solely on its database to output the statistics for each of the sites on the web.
Many things are visible, I will divide them into 3 parts.
Part 1: Organic traffic
. Estimated organic traffic (reliable)
The organic traffic of a site, with its estimated value
Calculated organic traffic is reliable and comes extremely close to reality. Note the “Cost of traffic” section which indicates the value of the traffic. This data is calculated according to the Adwords CPC of the keywords bringing organic traffic. Thus, it is easy to have a small estimate of the quality of organic traffic to a site.
. The traffic curve over time
The very precise detail of the organic traffic of a site, with notes on Google updates
I find this part extremely interesting. It aggregates global organic traffic (free and paid) month by month. It is possible to only see the traffic over 1 or 2 years to further refine the information. The SEMrush team also indicates major updates from Google (official) and allows us to see their impact on the traffic of the monitored site.
You also have access to the number of keywords present in the top 3/4 – 10/11 – 20 / etc.
You can also add your notes on the graph (site update, optimization, etc.) as on Google Analytics.
. Organic keywords bringing traffic
Classic functionality but oh so precious. For each keyword you have the traffic brought, its position in Google as well as the value of the CPC on Adwords. A click on “Detailed report” gives you even more details, we will see that in a future article.
But rest assured that you will have everything you need to analyze in detail where the natural traffic of any site is coming from.
. Distribution of positions
You can see at a glance the distribution of your positions.
This part is interesting to see if a competitor is dependent on a few requests that are in the top 3 or if, on the contrary, he is quite diverse. Note that this feature also makes it possible to measure the future potential of a site, especially if many requests are close to the Top 3 or the first page.
In this example, we can see that not only the traffic is balanced, but above all that the potential for additional traffic exists if the 11 – 20 go on the first page and the 4-10 on the Top 3.
. Organic branded vs unbranded traffic

Allows you to see at a glance the share of traffic linked to the brand. In this example, 44 keywords related to the brand of the studied site, and they correspond to approximately 17.5% of Google traffic.
. Competitor analysis

The full report offers other elements, such as the level of competition (based on the number of common keywords), the traffic and the number of keywords bringing traffic as well as the cost of the traffic, always estimated according to the CPCs of Adwords words.
Part 2: Backlinks
With the tools at your disposal, you have absolutely everything you need to monitor a competitor, assess your level against them, and find great sources of inspiration. SEMrush tool is a super-comprehensive site that can save you a lot of time and traffic if you use it correctly. This part is pretty classic, but essential when it comes to finding backlinks. For this function is a must-have for finding quality backlinks, and allows you to get backlinks very quickly as long as your content is relevant and provides a minimum of added value.
This is only an overview of a few links, a detailed report is available for each site.

I like to look at the rate of Follow / Nofollow links of well-placed sites so as not to depart from this framework in a link acquisition strategy. The idea of any optimization is to stay as natural and consistent as possible in the eyes of Google.

The main referring domains, i.e. those which send backlinks to the studied site

Here you just have to click on the links corresponding to the domes and the backlinks to see where exactly the links to deep pages come from.

Always interesting to see who is advertising for a competitor site. If you click on the number under “Announcements” you will have access to a more in-depth detail, within particular the announcements and the times when they were broadcast.

Besides domain name analysis, SEMrush offers other very interesting tools. Here is a quick summary of the ones I use the most or which I think are the most useful.

Part 1: Errors
SEMrush tool is particularly interesting if you are resuming a site and want to have an overview of the biggest errors it contains. The advantage of this tool is to save a lot of time. It scans the entire site in a few minutes and summarizes the points potentially blocking Google. The final report is divided into 3 categories, depending on the severity of the errors found.
The “Errors” part is the most important. Here is all it contains:
.Conflict in the Hreflang tag
.Pages without title tag
.Duplicate title tag pages
.5XX or 4XX errors
.Internal dead links
.External dead links
.Pages impossible to read (DNS / Url in bad format)
- .Duplicate meta descriptions

The “Warnings” section groups together the less serious errors, including

Again, minor errors may exist. Some are not serious, I am thinking in particular of the underscore in the URL or the internal links in Nofollow.
Finally, the “Notices” part presents the following things

. Robots.txt not found
Each error has a small explanation, the most common way to solve the problem, and the page on which the problem is located. Although some errors can be quite serious, one should not be overdramatic either. Some are almost essential on classic CMS and do not penalize the referencing of the site.
An explanation of the problem with a solution to fix it
This feature should be used to flush out the most serious errors, like duplicate content, missing title, etc. It is very rare at the end to arrive at 0 errors.
If you have a technical team you can try to aim for 100%, but I prefer to spend time on my content as long as no identified errors cause me concern and are problematic for my SEO.
On one page I have 11 errors. On closer inspection, 10 are external no-follow links, and 1 is a title tag similar to my H1. Nothing serious then.
Part 2: The page by page
This feature is especially for sites with a lot of pages. You can see page by page the various errors it contains. What I like about this part is the possibility of filtering according to errors and only showing pages with big problems.

A summary of the elements to correct on the site
On this part, you can see at a glance different statistics on the pages of the site. Among the criteria we find

. Pages in the Sitemap vs Pages crawled
. Page depth
. HTTP Status
. Pages that support AMP
. Pages with a Hreflang
. Pages with a Canonical
An important element is to be underlined in this part. Once again you should not panic if everything is not at 100%. About me, I have a lot of pages that support AMP, and which do not have for example Markups. You have to know the difference between serious errors and those that are not.
Part 4: Comparison of time / Progress
Statistics to see how problems are corrected over time
Functionality that allows you to see the evolution over time of errors. Possibility to sort and compare according to the start/end dates of your choice. Handy for determining if the site is going the right way or not. The “Progress” part allows you to see the same thing but in the form of a graph.
. Features I like about the Audit tool
I use the Errors and Statistics part a lot when I start working on a new site or test an optimization (plugin, etc). Overall I find this tool very interesting for beginners and experienced. It gives an extremely broad overview and allows you to concentrate very quickly on the essentials. I like the possibility of launching audits on the fly, it allows you to quickly see if the actions put in place are working.
. How I use it every day
When I work on a new project, I always run an audit with this tool. For sites with more than 100 pages, this is a considerable time saver. After doing the first job following the very first crawls, I focus on part 3 by adding markups or other things (recently AMP).
When the tool indicates to me some duplicate content during updates (https, www/nonwww, etc.), I apply the changes in the .htaccess. I then run a test again to see if my changes have paid off.
When the job is done, I let it go. As I indicated above, if the errors encountered are irrelevant to me, I do not try to correct them. I work primarily for visitors (and a little Google), not to have a 100% rate on this tool 😉
Part 1: Overview
Functionality allowing to have a real tracking of positions over time
Logically enough, SEMrush Tool offers to track the position of its sites on targeted keywords. Semrrush tool is extremely well done, it allows you to see at a glance its overall visibility, to obtain an estimate of future traffic, and to compare everything with its competitors (4 maximum).
As with any monitoring tool, you can see the evolution of your positions over time thanks to a very easy to use calendar.
Part 2: Ranking Distribution / Rankings
You can see at a glance the distribution of your positions
The Ranking Distribution part allows you to see for you and your competitors the number of keywords in the top 3 / top 10 and top 100. If you manage a large number of keywords, the tool allows you to find them using tags or a particularly efficient and intuitive search module.
Part 3: Landing Pages
This part gives you the pages on which your keywords stand out.
Part 4: Competitors Discovery
The very interesting part that allows you to see where you stand about the competition. Here you will find two main features.
. A map that situates you at a glance among your identified competitors and those you may have missed.
A map to see where your competitors are
. A summary in tabular form through which you can identify and add new competitors to watch.
You have to do a little sorting because the tool sometimes offers you competitors who are not.
. Features I like about the position tracking tool
The tool itself is very easy to use, but I particularly like the Competitor Watch feature. It allows you to quickly find competitors that are worth investigating. The “Losers / Winners” part combined with the calendar functionality is very interesting to assess the scope of an algorithm update.
It is particularly interesting to see the points to work on if an update is unfavorable to you.
I also like the presence of the average CPC and the average traffic brought by each request, it allows us to measure the strength of its requests at a glance.
Evaluation of the CPC and the position of its keywords
. How I use it every day
I am not one of the SEOs who monitor their queries every day. I like to use this tool once a week to get an overview of the actions taken. Most importantly, I monitor my main competitors and I refine my opinion on each update based on the overall developments of the competitors and the way they have handled their SEO.
Social media tool
We are moving away from SEO in this part. SEMrush proves here that it is much more than just an SEO SEmrush Magic tool and allows us to monitor the following networks.
The functionality of SEMrush regarding social networks
Once again you can not only compare your statistics with those of your competitors but also determine within your networks which were the most effective publications.
. Google +
The SEMrush tool is very interesting if you have a real Community management strategy. Using it when you don’t post a lot on the networks is of limited benefit. Its main strength is to identify the publications that have a very high engagement rate and to focus on it.
Conclusion on SEMrush
SEMrush Tool is excellent for any serious SEO who wants to take a step forward in their analyzes and research. It is for me the best tool currently on the market, its quality/price ratio is unbeatable at the time of this writing.
